Buckhurst Plant Hire Celebrating Women in Construction This International Women’s Day

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we’re shining the spotlight on the talented women in our industry and at Buckhurst Plant Hire. One of them being Paige, our Apprentice Plant Fitter based at our Leeds depot. Paige is part of the growing number of women pursuing careers in construction, helping to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes.

We caught up with Paige for a quick Q&A about her role, what she enjoys most, and her advice for other women considering a similar career path.

What inspired you to pursue a career as a mechanical fitter?

Paige: My dad was always tinkering with engines, and I used to help out at weekends working on vehicle repairs. I really enjoyed it.

What does a typical day look like for you at Buckhurst?

Paige: There’s always lots to do! My day involves checking what machinery is needed for hire, carrying out pre-hire inspections, and identifying what parts are required for repairs.

What have you learned so far in your apprenticeship?

Paige: I’ve gained a strong understanding of health and safety in the workplace and how different plant machinery operates. I’m also learning problem-solving skills through my Construction Plant Maintenance course at Askham Bryan College.

What do you enjoy most about working in the workshop?

Paige: I just enjoy working on machines, especially the larger plant items.

What advice would you give to other women considering a career in mechanics or construction?

Paige: Why not? Go for it! Do what you enjoy, whatever that is.

How does it feel to be part of a growing number of women in the industry?

Paige: I don’t really think too much about being a woman in this environment – we all just get on with what needs to be done.
